  • Resident - ABVP Food Animal Practice
    Iowa State University
    Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for a Resident in Food Animal Practice. We offer a training program in Food Animal Practice designed to prepare residents for board certification by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. The residency program will consist of a minimum of 2 years of supervised training and clinical experience in the science and practice of all disciplines in the field of Food Animal Practice. This training will occur in both the hospital and in the field with approximately 50% of effort devoted to each. If a concurrent graduate program is pursued, the duration of the residency will then necessarily be extended to three years. The resident is expected to participate in all aspects of case management including receiving, examination, diagnosing, daily management, client communication, discharging, and follow-up communication. They are also expected to rotate through emergency on call duty and emergency case management on a rotating basis with other house officers and clinicians.

This American Board of Veterinary Practice Food Animal Practice residency program has been designed to provide in-depth training in the practice of medicine, surgery, and theriogenology of livestock species and related basic and applied sciences. The program has been developed to provide residents with a comprehensive knowledge of individual and population-based conditions affecting food and fiber producing animals. Our program strives to prepare residents for active careers in academia or specialty practice, and the caseload provides an excellent and broad experience over the duration of the residency. The residency will fulfill the training requirements and partially fulfill the requirements for certification by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.

The initial appointment will be made for 12 months with annual renewal based on satisfactory completion of program requirements and a successful review in the previous year. A certificate of residency is awarded upon successful completion of the training program.

The successful candidate will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire and successfully complete a background check before an official offer of employment will be made. Proof of rabies titer read at an acceptable level within two years from the date employment will begin must be provided before incumbent’s anticipated start date. Additional health requirements enforced by external rotations during the course of this program will be the responsibility of the resident.
