Faculty Position in Neurology/Neurosurgery

The Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University invites national and international applications for a Clinical or Tenure Track faculty position in the Section of Neurology and Neurosurgery. Salary, rank, and title will be commensurate with the academic credentials and experience of the successful candidate. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, and board certification or eligibility for the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Neurology) or the European College of Veterinary Neurology. Training, experience and interest in neurosurgery is essential, although the position will provide opportunities to further neurosurgical skills.

The successful candidate will join a team of two, to make a team of three, board-certified faculty Neurologists /Neurosurgeons, three residents and three licensed veterinary technicians in providing service in Cornell University’s Companion Animal Hospital. Distribution of effort will be determined in accordance with the service needs, academic priorities, and the candidate’s areas of expertise within the specialty of Neurology/Neurosurgery; due consideration will be given to the candidate’s career goals.

The hospital is a comprehensive teaching and referral center with advanced diagnostic capabilities, including MRI (1.5T), CT (16-slice spiral CT), fluoroscopy, and intraoperative ultrasound. The service also has a MRI-guided stereotactic brain biopsy system (Brainsight), electrodiagnostic testing (Cadwell Lab, Inc., Sierra Wave), and a Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA).

Responsibilities will include shared oversight and training of neurology residents, surgery residents, rotating interns, and veterinary students. The candidate is expected to be a leader in excellent clinical care for medical and surgical patients. The appointee will be responsible for clinical and classroom instruction to veterinary students and house officers, active continuing education to the veterinary community, and will be expected to participate in collaborative clinical research (clinical track), or independent research (tenure track). Clinical duties require flexible working hours including daytime, evening, and weekend responsibilities. After-hours and emergency back-up support for Neurology and Surgery residents, managing neurosurgical cases, will be shared among Neurology faculty; however, the Companion Animal Hospital is also supported by 24/7 Emergency Receiving and Critical Care Services, and Anesthesiology Service. The candidate should exhibit outstanding interpersonal skills and a cooperative work ethic that will interface well with all sections of the hospital.
