Assistant Professor, Clinical Pathology
North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine

The Department of Population Health and Pathobiology within the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University invites applications from qualified individuals for a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology.

Qualifications: This position requires a DVM (or its equivalent). Applicants are expected to have completed a relevant residency in veterinary clinical pathology or have attained Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (DACVP) or European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (DECVCP). A NC Veterinary License or Faculty certificate required. In addition to the required DVM (or equivalent) a relevant Masters or PhD is preferred.

Expertise in Clinical Pathology with an emphasis on applied research is required. The candidate is expected to develop a research program that complements resident training and explores development and application of new diagnostic tools and applied clinical research; research is both independent and collaborative.

Research is expected to complement existing areas of research within the department and college while meeting the needs of residents and stakeholders. Current areas of departmental research include the pathology of infectious diseases, infectious diseases of food animals, viral and respiratory diseases of poultry, musculoskeletal diseases of poultry, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of zoonotic pathogens as related to antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease including Clostridium difficile, and toxicology and pharmacokinetic studies. The Department of Clinical Sciences also has a robust research program in companion animals. Other areas of interest include development of diagnostic tests for use in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

The candidate is expected to teach DVM students (including clinical teaching) and participate in clinical service duty and resident training which includes cytopathology service (as a primary duty or through resident supervision), training visiting house officers, consultation with clinicians/house officers regarding clinical pathology data, and providing support for the clinical pathology laboratory in general. Teaching commitments will include teaching courses (e.g., senior clinical pathology course), teaching in facilitated critical thinking and communications courses, offering at least one selective as the course coordinator and assisting in other selectives/electives as required.

The successful candidate will participate in all clinical pathology resident activities including journal club, rounds, and board preparation activities and will engage in training of house officers. The remaining time will be committed to professional/university service.

The incumbent will provide direct faculty oversight of the clinical pathology laboratory including assay development/implementation, troubleshooting, and greater involvement in routine laboratory function.

The incumbent will engage with clinical services representatives in the NC State Veterinary Hospital to improve/meet hospital needs for test development/selection, equipment, training, laboratory hours and communications.

The successful candidate will increase scholarly research activity by collaborations with clinical and basic sciences faculty within the Hospital and provide clinical pathology service duty including consulting with clinicians related to any and all aspects of clinical pathology, supervising and training clinical pathology residents and supervising visiting House Officers fulfilling specialty requirements in pathology.
