The laboratory of Virology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University (Merelbeke) is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic final year Master student (or recently graduated) in one of the disciplines specified below to join our research team and carry out his/her Ph.D. research from August/September 2017 onwards in the context of a new European H2020 project that has just started (DELTA-FLU). This innovative project aims to determine the key viral, host-related, and environmental factors that determine the dynamics of avian influenza in poultry and other host species, with the goal of improving prevention and control strategies against this important disease. In particular, your work within this Ph.D. project will address the possible role of pigs as a stepping stone for the spread of avian influenza from poultry to human beings and the generation of a potentially pandemic influenza virus. Our laboratory is specialized in swine influenza and in studying the viral genetic factors that allow avian influenza viruses to transmit efficiently among pigs (Mancera Gracia JC et al., Scientific Reports 2017 May 2;7(1):1323; Mancera Gracia JC et al., PLoS One. 2017 Apr 6;12(4):e0175267).
Your experimental work will include traditional virological techniques including cell and organ culture, molecular biology including isolation of reassortant viruses, genome analysis and reverse genetics, and pathogenesis and transmission experiments in pigs. You will join our influenza team and will work with other Ph.D. students and technicians. You have to be prepared to work with experimental pigs and take care of the animals during weekends and evenings.

Profile of the candidate

- Master degree in Veterinary Medicine, Bio-engineering (cell and gene biotechnology), Biomedical Sciences, or equivalent before the start of the Ph.D. work (August/September 2017).
- Minimal grade of Master diploma: distinction (70% and above).
- Highly motivated, hard-working, very accurate and with critical attitude.
- Be prepared to present his/her work in (inter)national meetings and participate in application for research grants.
- Be interested in learning (under guidance) a diverse array of research techniques.
- Candidates should have an excellent command of the English language, both oral and written.
- Candidates are expected to obtain their Ph.D. in 4 years.
