Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be able to hold a Texas state veterinary license, a DEA license, and have board certification by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) or meet the requirements for eligibility to sit the ACVSMR certification examination. Board certification is expected within 3 years of hire for non-certified applicants. Applicants are required to have interest, experience, training, and/or expertise in clinical teaching and provide high-quality patient care for a referral population of equine lameness patients. Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with horse owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff.

The successful candidate will commit 60-70% of their effort to clinical service, with effort divided equally between clinical teaching and patient care, on the Equine Sports Medicine and Advanced Imaging Service (ESMI). The ESMI is building toward a 3-member faculty team with responsibility for a year-round 4th year student clinical rotation of ~4 veterinary students each. The clinical teaching responsibilities additionally include residents of specialty training programs including equine surgery and equine internal medicine, interns, visiting scholars, and technicians. As one of the busiest clinical services in the Large Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (LA-VMTH), the ESMI service provides patient care for a diverse caseload including primary opinion and referral cases representing a wide spectrum of horse breeds and disciplines. Western performance and English performance horses are most common. Demonstration of knowledge and application of advanced imaging modalities is required. Knowledge and experience with treatment of laminitis is strongly preferred. Experience with patient care during and after anesthetic recovery is preferred. Substantial effort is expected to be dedicated to consultation with other specialists in the hospital and communication with referring veterinarians throughout the region and patient owners. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute directly to the ESMI service in a collegial, collaborative and team-centered manner to achieve the teaching and patient care missions of the School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS code of professional conduct.

This position will have a 20-30% commitment to teaching of pre-clinical students in the integrated and highly experiential DVM professional curriculum. Experiential and innovative techniques and case material are used to teach professional students. The successful candidate will be expected to develop well-organized, creative, and interactive lectures and laboratory materials. Additionally, the faculty member will be expected to be an excellent role model and mentor to veterinary students with interests in the equine industry.

This position will have a 10% service commitment. This includes involvement in departmental and college committees and other academic citizenship activities. Additionally, faculty members are encouraged to pursue service opportunities within their specialty colleges, veterinary medical organizations, and other professional organizations.

The LA-VMTH is a well maintained, climate-controlled facility with separate facilities for isolation and theriogenology. The large animal intensive care unit is fully-staffed 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Clinical services in the LA-VMTH include equine orthopedic surgery, equine soft tissue surgery, equine internal medicine, equine community practice, equine field services, equine sports medicine & advanced imaging, equine theriogenology, and food animal medicine & surgery.

Diagnostic imaging is supported by a highly experienced and accomplished team of ACVR boarded radiologists including 5 radiologists who additionally hold certification in Equine Diagnostic Imaging. Imaging capabilities include a variety of ultrasound options, three MinX-Ray portable radiology units, including one wireless unit, VetRocket DR, and large overhead radiology capabilities, a 40-slice Siemens computed tomography unit designed to accommodate both small and large animals, a Siemens Verio 3T MRI, and nuclear scintigraphy. Ultrasound is supported by a dedicated faculty in radiology and a dedicated faculty member. Outdoor facilities include a covered asphalt surface lameness area, grassy areas, a covered riding arena, and a round pen. Equine and food animal field services provide ambulatory on farm patient care.

Pre-clinical teaching occurs in the Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC), a 330,000 square foot, state-of-the-art teaching facility. Located adjacent to the LA-VMTH, VBEC is home to a variety of educational venues for lectures, laboratories, small group learning, and an array of hands-on skills training. The clinical skills lab provides low to high fidelity skills trainers including SynDaver® surgical models and ultrasonography machines. This complex also houses the DVM Center for Educational Technologies, which provides pedagogical support to faculty for teaching and learning. Additionally, VBEC houses a Wellness Room, equipped with weights, treadmills, elliptical machines, and locker rooms, which are available to faculty, staff, and students in our school.
