The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, tenure track or clinical faculty position in Food Animal Surgery. This appointment may be at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor or, Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate, or Clinical Professor commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be able to hold a Texas state veterinary license, a DEA license, and have board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or be eligible to take Phase II of the ACVS examination. An advanced academic degree (MS or PhD) is preferred. Applicants are required to have interest, experience, training and expertise in teaching in both pre-clinical and clinical programs, provide high-quality patient care for a referral population of large animal surgical patients, and engaged in independent research. Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with animal owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff.

The tenure-track faculty hire will devote approximately 30-50% to scholarly activities, 30-50% effort to clinical service, 10% to teaching, and 10-20% to service.

  1. Scholarly activity: The faculty member will be expected to engage in scholarly activity that is synergistic with the VMB’s research mission. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and support an extramurally funded, creative and productive research program in relevant fields of interest. Programs that could involve professional students, residents, and/or graduate students are preferred. Contributions to collaborative research are also valued. A start-up support package will be provided.

 

  1. Clinical service: The food animal medicine and surgery (FAMS) service provides routine and emergency care for cattle, sheep, goats, New and Old World camelids, swine (including potbelly pigs), and exotic hoof stock in the hospital. Clinical assignments including a low amount of after-hours emergency duty will be based on clinical needs and is shared by the faculty team (including large animal emergency and critical care clinicians). The robust surgical caseload reflects production animals, show animals, and pets of multiple large animal species. The FAMS service sees both elective and emergency cases on primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. There is an enthusiastic group of large animal surgeons to provide support, input, and assistance on cases. Available diagnostic equipment includes 1m and 3m endoscopes, dynamic endoscopy, ultrasound, and advanced imaging including CT/MRI capabilities. A dedicated food animal surgery suite is supported by highly trained surgical technicians with access to advanced surgical instrumentation. An intensive care unit and isolation facility is available to all clinicians and is fully staffed 24 hours per day and 365 days per year by dedicated technical personnel. 

 

  1. Teaching: The faculty member will participate in the clinical training of surgery, medicine, and veterinary practitioner residents, interns, and veterinary students. Teaching responsibilities include instruction of pre-clinical students in an integrated and highly experiential DVM curriculum through collaborative team-taught, lectures, laboratories and small-group learning sessions, clinical instruction of fourth year veterinary students on the FAMS rotation, and participation in a variety of departmental and interdepartmental rounds and seminars. The faculty member should be an effective teacher, and able to work with persons from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The development of innovative instructional delivery is encouraged and valued.

 

  1. Service: Promotion of departmental camaraderie and a positive workplace through participation in academic service is expected. Additionally, service to professional and specialty organizations is highly valued and encouraged. Faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS code of professional conduct.
