The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology with the College of Veterinary Medicine offers a three-year residency, which fulfills, in part, ACVP board eligibility requirements. Those who are qualified and choose to pursue graduate studies subsequent to residency training are encouraged to do so through the College of Veterinary Medicine graduate programs. Two or more additional years are usually needed to complete requirements for the MS. degree.

The residency program has two primary goals. 1. To prepare residents to successfully complete the clinical pathology certifying examination administered by The American College of Veterinary Pathologists. 2. To educate residents so they obtain a solid understanding of the laboratory methods and pathologic bases of diseases to prepare them for careers as veterinary clinical pathologists. To meet these goals, the vast majority of their effort will be devoted to clinical pathology training including teaching, service, and small group discussions and a small amount of effort in other scholarly activity including, but not limited to presentations at national meetings, case reports, reviews, textbook chapters, and clinical investigations.
