Teaching Assistant Professor, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences

Teaching Assistant Professor in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences - Non Tenure appointment-48 week appointment. Position Summary: The primary duty of the person in this position is to work effectively with department faculty and staff in recruitment, retention, academic advising and instruction of students enrolled in the three departmental majors. The person in this position will provide specific academic and career counseling to students considering or enrolled in departmental majors. The three majors of the department average a total enrollment of approximately 450 students at the University Park campus with an additional variable number at other campus locations. The successful candidate for this position will hold a DVM/VMD degree with an M.S/PhD preferred and have several years of experience in clinical veterinary practice. Primary duties include: Work with the current advising team to coordinate the academic and career advisement of undergraduate students enrolled in majors offered by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. Maintain appropriate databases of students enrolled in departmental majors and monitor academic progress of all students in the program; teach in several courses including VB Sc 50, Mechanisms of Disease, VB Sc 280 Current Issues in Veterinary Medicine, VB SC 403, Principles of Disease Control and co-teach the laboratory portion of VB SC/Biol 421, Comparative Anatomy. Other formal course teaching may be required in the future as department needs dictate.; Serve as the academic adviser to students enrolled in departmental majors at University Park to assist students in accomplishing educational and career goals, guide students in course selection and scheduling, assist in resolving academic problems and challenges, monitor academic progress, and assess student needs and make appropriate professional referrals as required. Serve as department liaison with students enrolled at campus locations other than University Park utilizing appropriate electronic communication and occasional travel to the campus locations; work with the current team in the recruitment of new and transfer students for all department programs. Respond in a timely manner to requests for information in all forms. Work with Talisma and/or other University sanctioned computer programs to manage communications with prospective students and students in offer status. Coordinate the development and dissemination of public information in print and web based media. Participate in the planning of innovative programs/open house events at the department level while maintaining compliance with university policies. Participate in recruitment events both on and off campus such as College Open Houses, Spend A Summer Day, Farm Show, Ag Progress Days, etc.; serve as a resource on academic matters for faculty, academic advisers and students. Serve on various departmental and college committees as needed; serve as the primary liaison with the alumni of the department and the college. Develop an effective communications program to enhance contacts of the department with program alumni.
