Position Summary:
The Attending Veterinarian (AV) is responsible for providing direct or delegated veterinary care for all animals used in research, testing, teaching, and outreach across the main University of Idaho campus and all University of Idaho satellite locations to ensure the health and welfare of animals and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies. The AV serves as the regulatory Attending Veterinarian and a standing voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). The AV plans, develops, directs, and implements all aspects of the veterinary care program. Reporting to the Director of Research Assurances, the AV is accountable to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and is responsible for supervision of the Laboratory Animal Research Facility (LARF).
Minimum Qualifications:
DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited institution, or certification from either the AVMA/ECFVG, AAVSB/PAVE, or other equivalent foreign graduate equivalency program.
Three years licensed veterinary experience, including post-graduate experience in laboratory animal care and medicine.
License to practice veterinary medicine in Idaho, or eligibility for Idaho licensure with the application submitted within the first 10 days of hire.
USDA certification for issuance of health certificates in Idaho, or eligibility for USDA certification with the application submitted within the first 10 days of hire.
Controlled substance registrations with the DEA and Idaho State Board of Pharmacy, or eligibility for registrations with the applications submitted within the first 10 days of hire.
After hour on-call availability for emergency animal care consultation and response.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong clinical, diagnostic, and surgical skills with a variety of small and large laboratory animal species.
Excellent knowledge of animal welfare regulations and contemporary practices in animal health, care, and use.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong managerial and supervisory skills.
Diplomate, American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine
Prior veterinary experience at an academic research institution.
Completion of a residency in laboratory animal medicine.
Prior veterinary experience with farm animals, birds, aquatics, and other wildlife.
Experience at an AAALAC accredited institution or with AAALAC accreditation process.
Prior experience working with animal biosafety levels 1-3.
