The Department of Medicine and Epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California-Davis is recruiting for a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in Community Practice.
Veterinarian with competence and advanced clinical skills in small animal primary care with an interest in reproduction and breeding services for small animals is required. Candidates with specialty training in small animal reproduction (eg, RCVS certificate or diploma, ACT or ECAR board eligibility or certification, M(F)ACVSc ) desired but not required. Clinical experience and competence in small animal primary care medicine, preventative care, general dentistry and surgery are required; those with an interest in reproductive medicine preferred. A demonstrated aptitude/experience in the principles of veterinary practice management is preferred. A demonstrated aptitude/experience with teaching, particularly clinical instruction is required. USDA accreditation will be required within one year of hire. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere are required. A minimum of 3 years of experience in veterinary small animal practice is required.
Clinical: The position includes a 90% clinical commitment to the Community Practice Service in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students; providing health care and service to patients; growing the small animal theriogenology caseload within the Community Practice service, and advising and consulting with clients and other veterinarians. The individual is expected to demonstrate distinction in clinical practice.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be daily supervision and instruction of senior students in small animal community practice and theriogenology, including general medicine, theriogenology, routine dental treatments, and entry-level surgeries. Other responsibilities may include participation in a limited number of didactic lectures regarding wellness care and theriogenology, participation in laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum that relate to doctoring skills, surgical skills, theriogenology, and other clinical techniques; and contributing to the growth and development of an integrated community practice service that incorporates wellness, theriogenology, medicine, and surgery. The individual hired is expected to demonstrate excellence in clinical teaching. Applicants with experience in teaching at the staff, local veterinary medical association or community level are preferred.
Professional Competence: The individual is expected to advance the discipline of community practice and theriogenology within the VMTH, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. The applicant is expected to work collegially with other services in the VMTH to reinforce the VMTH team environment, including offering referral of patients that could benefit from specialist care to the specialty clinic.
Service: The successful applicant will be required to participate in a limited amount of University and public service through committee work, with an emphasis on committees of relevance to the VMTH.
