Head of School and Dean
Sydney School of Veterinary Science

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. We employ over 7,600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students.

Since the founding of veterinary science in 1910, the mission of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science (SSVS) has been to provide the nation’s best training in the health and conservation of animals. Veterinary science at Sydney was ranked 1st in the Southern Hemisphere and 9th in the World in the QS World University Subject Rankings 2016, and rated 5/5 for research in the Australian Government’s 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia rankings. The school continues to strengthen its place in the international veterinary education environment with multiple accreditations, an internationalised curriculum, our student profile and our contributions to teaching scholarship.

We are currently inviting applications for a new Head of School and Dean of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science.

As Head of School and Dean, you are a member of the Faculty of Science leadership team and are also responsible for the School of Veterinary Science leadership team. In this position, you will contribute to the overall faculty strategy and goals, and have accountability for setting, communicating and achieving faculty academic and operational goals, and strategies at the school level. You will manage the school budget and expenditure and are accountable for its financial sustainability.

You will serve as a conduit into the University leadership team via the dean and the heads of school forum, where you will have input into the University strategic plan and governance, and whole-of-University decision making.

This is a rare opportunity to shape one of the world’s leading schools of veterinary science to prepare graduates and support ground-breaking research in the context of a rapidly changing external environment. The successful candidate will be an outstanding academic leader with a distinguished teaching and research record in veterinary science, and be eligible for registration as a veterinarian in the state of New South Wales for accreditation purposes. You will have demonstrated senior leadership and management skills, driving change and establishing and sustaining a high achieving, positive learning environment for both student and researchers. You will also be able to demonstrate a keen interest in actively and collaboratively contributing to the work of the wider faculty, University Executive, and other critical University governance groups as required.

Term and remuneration
The headship is available for a term of four years in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal, subject to negotiation. The successful candidate will also be offered a professorial appointment in an appropriate discipline in the school and will retain that position at the conclusion of their headship.
