The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a faculty appointment in Soft Tissue Surgery. The position is available at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, Health Program or Tenure Stream depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join our dynamic team to become the 4th soft tissue surgeon and an integral member of the Surgery Section, which includes 4 orthopedic surgeons, 6 residents, 9 service-dedicated veterinary technicians and an international surgical training scholar. The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises over 40 faculty, and has an onsite, state-of-the art Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC provides outstanding patient care and is staffed with highly qualified veterinary technicians, social workers and other care providers to support the specialist services. In addition to soft tissue surgery, the VMC is well represented in specialty areas including a very active 24/7 emergency and critical care medicine service, internal medicine, orthopedics, oncology, neurology, cardiology, anesthesiology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, dentistry, primary care, interventional radiology, zoo and wildlife medicine, and dermatology. We are equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, including 10 operating suites, an interventional radiology suite, a wound management suite, Storz HD video laparoscopy/thoracoscopy towers, Zeiss operating microscope, GE Revolution 64-slice helical CT, OEC intra-operative C-arm, Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI, Scintron nuclear medicine suite, Varian linear accelerator, Olympus and Storz videoendoscopy, continuous renal replacement therapy and positive pressure ventilator support.

The soft tissue surgery service has a strong program with a busy caseload and experienced, supportive faculty. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include management of referral soft tissue surgery cases, clinical instruction of house officers and students, and a 30-40% commitment to scholarly contributions in the candidate’s areas of interest and expertise. Participation in the didactic pre-clinical teaching curriculum and committee assignments is also expected. Assignments of clinical service, teaching and scholarly activity are negotiable with the Department Chairperson. Evaluations and promotions are based on the faculty member’s performance within the agreed assignments.

In addition to the two human medical schools on MSU campus, we have several regional research institutes, cancer centers and major human hospital complexes, providing unique and exciting opportunities for collaborative activities. Such activities are encouraged at both the Departmental and College level, and support is available for grant writing, acquiring external funding and processing grant submissions. Internal funding opportunities are also available through the CVM endowed research funds. The College and Department have active faculty development and mentorship programs to facilitate career progression.

Applicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan. ACVS specialty board certification or board eligibility is required. An advanced research degree and/or an interest in surgical oncology will also be favorably considered. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a team. Michigan State University offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.
