The Department of Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Avian Virology. This faculty position will be a twelve-month, tenure-track position with a focus on research.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a competitive research program in avian virology that contributes to the research mission of the Department of Pathobiology and College of Veterinary Medicine. The candidate will collaborate with other scientists within, but not limited to the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, and/or Science and Mathematics as well as Extension specialists/agents, the Alabama Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and poultry industry leaders. Extramural funding to support his/her research programs will be secured from sources such as USDA and other related federal sponsors, industry sources and commodity boards in Alabama and across the country.

Development of a strong graduate student training program is expected. The candidate will participate in graduate education by mentoring graduate students, chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the research results with their students in reputable, peer-reviewed journals. The candidate may be asked to contribute to the training of veterinarians.

Departmental, college, and university committee service as well as participation in professional organizations is expected.

The Department of Pathobiology consists of more than 30 full-time faculty, whose programs cover a broad range of areas, with infectious diseases, in particular avian diseases, as an important focus. Currently, 10 faculty members are involved in research projects on various aspects of poultry diseases. Other areas of research include molecular diagnostics, food safety, platelet pathophysiology, molecular genetics, cancer biology/genetics, epidemiology, and neuropathology. The Department hosts diagnostic services that include bacteriology, mycology, virology, anatomic and clinical pathology, parasitology, and molecular diagnostics. In addition, through institutional collaboration with the Hudson-Alpha Institute for Biotechnology, a full array of genomic sequencing and functional genomic technologies is available.

Auburn residents enjoy a thriving community, recognized as one of the "best small towns in America," with moderate climate and easy access to major cities or to beach and mountain recreational facilities. Auburn is located approximately 1.5 hours southwest of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with a routine shuttle service that is friendly for both business and leisurely travel. The vibrant twin cities of Auburn - Opelika have a population of over 160,000. The Auburn public school system is considered one of the best public school systems in the United States, regularly ranking in the top 200 systems out of 10,000. It contains the number one public elementary school in Alabama. Multiple other schools are in the top 25 in both school rankings and diversity. Auburn - Opelika boasts excellent medical health facilities. The Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center brings national and international performances to Auburn. Outdoor recreational opportunities including trails for walking or cycling, Lake Martin with 720 miles of shoreline, and a nearby National Forest and State Parks.
