Cummings School has recently introduced a new curriculum, expanded its class size to 130 students, and is building a new veterinary learning center. In addition, we are expanding our three small animal clinics, enhancing our research footprint and planning for the growth of our specialty and referral hospital, the Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals.

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences is committed to excellence in education, scholarly activity, and clinical missions. The faculty is home to clinical specialists and primary care veterinarians who focus on small animal care and teaching. Faculty in the department teach DVM students and house officers, promote animal health and advance the science of diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases of small animals through basic and clinical research. The department has research strengths across a range of clinical and translational research areas, including comparative and translational oncology, cardiovascular health, and antimicrobial stewardship. Carrying out its mission are over 50 faculty, 45 residents, and 7 staff members. Faculty members provide clinical care in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (specialty and referral care), Tufts at Tech Community Veterinary Clinic (accessible care), and the Luke and Lily Lerner Spay/Neuter Clinic (please see “Hospitals and Clinics” tab on the Cummings School website.

The department chair is expected to foster a collegial environment, support the professional development of faculty and staff and encourage collaborative research and education within the department and across the school, particularly with the new Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. The department chair works cooperatively with the relevant hospital and clinic directors to oversee and support faculty. The chair is responsible for the department budget and administrative affairs and works collaboratively with colleagues and senior leadership at the school and university level.

Time devoted to clinical, research/scholarly activities, and teaching will be determined based on the interests and experience of the candidate. For additional information, please see the Guidelines for Appointment of Cummings School Department Chairs. Faculty policies and guidelines can be found here.
