The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to the development of a multidisciplinary flagship program in Global Health in recognition of the critical role played by veterinary medicine in addressing global challenges related to food animal welfare and sustainability, production, food security, zoonotic diseases, animal health, and public health. To meet these needs, the college seeks to fill a position in Global Production Animal Welfare.
The candidate is expected to establish an independent research program and work collaboratively with local and international producers, investigators, and with specialists in other disciplines to identify and address the welfare and health of production animals.
Candidates must have expertise in the practice of food animal production (poultry, cattle and/or swine), specifically in addressing animal welfare, husbandry, nutrition, and infectious disease investigation and prevention. The ability to work with investigators in developing countries is expected.
The successful candidate will be responsible for introducing a global health perspective on food animal welfare and production to food animal-focused DVM students through core teaching and research opportunities (domestic and abroad). The candidate is expected to assist with house officer, graduate and veterinary student teaching, and work with other faculty at the CVM to strengthen the relationship between the NC Diagnostic Laboratory (Rollins) and CVM, and expand collaborations with the NC State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Prestage Department of Poultry Science and/or the Department of Animal Science (candidate-dependent).
The candidate will liaise with industry, particularly those in North Carolina, to address emerging and persistent issues affecting poultry, swine and/or ruminant health; a timely response is expected.
Work with producers may include collecting, analyzing, and communicating data obtained through observation, questionnaires, and/or sample collection. The successful candidate is expected to work as a member of collaborative teams to develop and implement best practices that ensure the health and well-being of food-production animals in addition to addressing important relevant issues related to animal welfare that affects production, food security and public health. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to study the impact of food-borne zoonotic pathogens, antimicrobial resistance/alternatives to antimicrobials, emerging viral disease as they relate to animal welfare.
The candidate will interact with the Global Health Director on relevant animal welfare projects and issues. Domestic and international (overseas) travel for research, extension, and educational purposes is expected.

A relevant PhD degree is required. A DVM or equivalent degree and board certification in animal welfare is preferred but not mandatory.
