The University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a tenure track faculty position (Assistant/Associate Professor) in Ruminant Nutrition, dairy cattle emphasis, within the Department of Clinical Studies at New Bolton Center. Professional responsibilities will be divided between research (75%) and teaching as well as facilitating knowledge transfer to stakeholders of the dairy industry (25%).
Applicants must hold a VMD/DVM or equivalent degree, or a PhD, with advanced training in dairy nutrition. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program, and skills in obtaining competitive extramural funding to sustain his/her research are crucial. The ability to incorporate new concepts into developing dairy ration software and to model metabolism and environmental flows of nutrients (e.g., N and C footprint) is desirable. Additional expectations include active participation in teaching basic nutritional concepts as well as advanced ruminant nutrition to veterinary students. He/she should be knowledgeable and have relevant experience in dairy production and herd management to incorporate knowledge into the veterinary curriculum. Clear communication skills and effectiveness in teaching are essential.
We are seeking a faculty member who, in addition to establishing an independent research program, is enthusiastic in joining and collaborating with our multidisciplinary dairy-centric team with expertise encompassing microbial genomics, animal health economics, and environmental stewardship. He/she will be expected to interact with faculty and our field investigation team to provide insight and contribute to the betterment of the dairy community locally, nationally and globally. The successful candidate will have access to the Marshak Dairy, a herd of 200 dairy cows for research activities. Laboratory space will be available depending on the individual’s requirements. Collaborative research opportunities also exist at the University of Pennsylvania main campus in Philadelphia.
New Bolton Center is located in Chester County with easy access to numerous dairy farms, and is only 35 miles from Philadelphia, combining the advantages of a rural setting with those of a nearby major metropolitan center.
