The University of Kentucky’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences is seeking applicants for a 12-month, tenure track position (approximately 75% Extension, 20% Research, 5% Service) in the field of ruminant nutrition to be located at the UK Research and Education Center located in Princeton, KY. This position has the expectation for excellence in Extension programming working with a diverse clientele, including Kentucky beef producers, industry personnel and county Extension agents. The candidate will be required to provide educational programs across the state and develop a nationally recognized Extension program. Extension responsibilities include: developing and delivering scholarly educational materials and programs; technical support for county-based Extension agents, producers and/or allied industry personnel; seeking and procuring extramural funding; and additional service to the department, college and university. Additionally, the candidate will be the faculty supervisor of the Research and Education Center beef research facility, will coordinate daily management of the beef herd, and will work collaboratively with campus-based departmental faculty on research efforts. The candidate will also be expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with faculty, staff, and extension professionals within the Department, University and the Cooperative Extension Service. The individual will have the opportunity to develop their own research area with a broad focus in applied beef nutrition, health/immunity, and/or other production management areas.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Animal Sciences or related field and expertise in beef cattle nutrition and management. The candidate must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills; effectively engage in team environments with agents, faculty and clientele; demonstrate the ability to supervise others; and be willing to assume leadership roles. Prior experience in beef cattle management is preferred. Preference will be given to those with evidence of scholarly productivity and grantsmanship and a desire to work with others to build an excellent Extension and research program.
Location/Facilities: This position is located at the Kentucky Research and Education Center, located off-campus in the western region of the state (Princeton, KY). The center is currently undergoing significant infrastructure improvements as the station becomes the Grain and Forage Center of Excellence. Extension specialists and researchers from various departments are located on the station providing opportunities for inter-disciplinary research and Extension program development. Laboratory, office and meeting room spaces are undergoing improvements. An Angus/Brangus cow-calf herd, approximately 150 breeding females, is maintained for research at the Princeton station. A semi-confinement barn with Calan gates is available for feeding trials. A pasture-based Calan gate system also allows pasture supplementation research to be conducted. Research opportunities also exist to collaborate and initiate research at the C. Oran Little Research Center located in central Kentucky near Versailles.
