The Department of Comparative Pathobiology in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is accepting applications for a term-limited, full-time position as an Assistant Teaching Professor of Veterinary Physiology. The position will be available from July 2, 2023 to June 30, 2024, and be eligible for renewal depending on the needs of the School. We seek an individual with a strong interest and aptitude in teaching veterinary biochemistry and physiology. They will also be expected to contribute to other courses in the curriculum including case-based learning, clinical skills, and systems-specific pathophysiology courses depending on their area of expertise. There will also be opportunities to engage in the preparation of our new curriculum to be launched Fall 2024.
The Department of Comparative Pathobiology is a multi-disciplinary department, with expertise and teaching responsibilities in neurosciences, physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, clinical and anatomic pathology, reproductive health, animal models of disease, laboratory animal medicine, biochemistry, and veterinary education. Cummings School is home to the Joseph Kelley, DVM Simulation Laboratory, a newly established 3,000-sq-ft teaching space dedicated to hands on learning of veterinary procedures and surgeries, and a growing Large Animal Simulation Laboratory. Both facilities support the clinical skills courses for our veterinary students and have a developing role as a resource for interns and residents as well as in veterinary continuing education. While our physiology and biochemistry courses are traditional lecture-based courses, and case-based learning sessions are interactive discussions, clinical skills courses are hands-on and take place in the simulation labs.
The successful candidate will be expected to devote 30 - 35 weeks to educational activities, 5 - 10 weeks for collaborative research and scholarly activities, and 5 - 10 weeks of service activities. Five weeks are available for vacation and other time off. The exact distribution of activities, within the guidelines of the school, will be dependent on the interests and expertise of the successful candidate.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree in a relevant area of expertise by the date of hire. A PhD degree and clinical experience are considered assets. Excellent communication skills and a reputation for collegiality are required. The successful candidate will have at least five years of teaching experience and demonstrate the attributes required to excel in teaching other required areas for this position.
Application Instructions
Applications must be received by May 12, 2023 to receive full consideration. Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter describing their qualifications and experience, teaching experience and interests, and their reasons for applying for the position.
