Associate Dean for Clinical Education
Position Announcement

Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Clinical Education. This is a faculty position available at the associate professor or professor level. S/he will be a person committed to educating and empowering students to become strong clinicians. The Associate Dean for Clinical Education reports directly to the dean.

Essential duties of the position are as follows:

Clinical Rotations:
-The Associate Dean for Clinical Education (ADCE) works with faculty to ensure adequate student capacity for on-campus rotations.
-The ADCE is responsible for oversight of adequacy and quality of all off-campus rotations.
-The ADCE will monitor rotation feedback from students and preceptors, and will respond when necessary.
-Duties may include visits to off-campus preceptor sites when needed.
-Clinical rotation syllabi management
-Clinical rotation outcomes — the ADCE will work with the Director of Outcomes Assessment to provide and assess data suitable for program evaluation and inclusion in accreditation reports.

Oversight of RMS
-The ADCE must learn the proprietary Rotation Management System (RMS) software used to manage all rotations, and be fluent in its use.
-When changes to RMS are needed, the ADCE will work with IT to accomplish necessary modifications.

Comprehensive Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE)
-The ADCE will serve as chair of the OSCE Committee, and will work with the Director of Outcomes assessment to evaluate OSCE results and recommend changes to address student performance issues.

Practice of Veterinary Medicine courses
-The first 8 quarters of the D.V.M. curriculum contain Practice of Veterinary Medicine (PVM) courses that largely teach clinical skills necessary for advancement to the clinical rotations of the final 5 quarters of the curriculum. The ADCE is responsible for monitoring the content, expenses, and evaluation of the series of PVM courses.

-The ADCE will submit capital and non-salary budgets as assigned by the dean.
-The ADCE will approve and monitor expenditures for any budget assigned by the dean.

-Because a large portion of the curriculum entails clinical training, the ADCE will be an ex officio member of the CVM Curriculum Committee.
-The ADCE will be involved in moving the CVM towards planning, implementation, and evaluation of an integrated D.V.M. curriculum. The ADCE will work with faculty either as chair or a member of a subcommittee of the CVM Curriculum Committee dedicated to integrated curriculum development.

Committee Service
-In addition to service on the OSCE Committee and the Curriculum Committee, the ADCE will serve on the CVM Executive Committee, the University One Health Committee, and other committees as assigned by the dean.

-The ADCE is expected to be involved in some student clinical laboratory teaching, especially in the PVM courses.
-Some additional teaching can be done in the ADCE’s area of expertise, if desired.
-Some teaching in clinical rotations could be done, depending on the qualifications/desires of the candidate.

Supervisory Responsibilities  
-The clinical education coordinators, who schedule rotations and monitor student/preceptor feedback and attendance, report directly to the ADCE. One senior administrative assistant reports to the ADCE.
-All adjunct faculty, clinical or pre-clinical will report to the ADCE. The ADCE will provide ongoing evaluation of the need for adjunct faculty and associated costs.

-The ADCE will provide material on clinical rotations, and OSCEs for inclusion in accreditation documents, and other documents requested by the dean.

Required qualifications:
-D.V.M. degree or equivalent
-Significant clinical experience either at a university or private practice
-Willingness and ability to become an expert in competency-based veterinary medical education.
-Strong communication skills
-Collaborative mindset to foster teamwork
-Dedication to student learning
-Driver’s license
-Eligibility for an Arizona faculty veterinary license

Desired additional qualifications:
-Clinical teaching experience – either in a university or in a private practice setting
-Board certification in a specialty recognized by the AVMA
-Although an independent research program is not an expectation for this position, willingness to be involved in collaborative scholarly activity is considered a strength.

The addition of veterinary medicine on the Glendale campus provides an excellent opportunity to train students following the principles of One Health at Arizona’s first veterinary college.  The MWU-CVM received full accreditation in the fall of 2018.

The CVM is housed in Cactus Wren Hall and in the Animal Health Institute.  Cactus Wren Hall is a new facility with ample classrooms, teaching laboratories, research laboratories, conference rooms, and offices.  The Animal Health Institute is comprised of The Companion Animal Clinic, The Equine and Bovine Center, and The Pathology Laboratory.  The Companion Animal Clinic is a modern and innovative veterinary hospital for small animals. The 110,000 sq. ft. building contains state-of-the-art medical, surgical, dental, and intensive care facilities. A full range of endoscopic equipment is available. Additional patient services include medical oncology, neurology, physical therapy, cardiology, and therapeutic plasma exchange.  The clinic also offers full-service clinical pathology and microbiology laboratories. In addition to outstanding clinical facilities and equipment, the Companion Animal Clinic houses a pharmacy, a large and well-equipped surgery teaching laboratory, simulated examination rooms for clinical communications training using standardized clients/patients, and ample conference and small-group meeting rooms.  Full service clinical pathology and clinical microbiology laboratories are housed in the clinic building.  Adjacent to the Companion Animal Clinic is the Equine and Bovine Center, which houses large animal teaching and treatment facilities, and small herds of cattle and horses.  The Diagnostic Pathology Center offers a full range of anatomical pathology and forensic pathology services, and contains ample teaching spaces.
