Veterinarian with advanced clinical training, clinical experience, and competence in equine medicine and surgery is required. Specialty college board certification is preferred, and could include the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal), European College of Equine Internal Medicine or American/European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Advanced research training (PhD, MS or equivalent degree) focused on equine infectious disease, geriatric medicine, endocrinology, performance evaluation or other area is preferred. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching, particularly clinical instruction, is required. Documented record of creative scholarship or potential to develop a focused research program is required. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals not eligible for a full California license can obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1)
Clinical: The position includes a 50% clinical commitment to the Equine Field Service unit at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students, interns and residents; providing service to clients and health care to patients of the Equine Field Service; and consulting with local veterinarians and clients.
Teaching: Teaching responsibilities will include direct daily supervision and instruction of senior students in equine primary care and first opinion emergency medicine, dentistry, lameness and surgery. Other teaching responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures, discussions, case-based learning and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; 4) participation in the graduate academic training program(s) at UC Davis.
Research: Faculty are expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. The development of a creative, independent and productive basic and/or clinically-oriented research program in areas related to equine medicine is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position, including publication of results in professional/scientific journals. Individuals will provide leadership in directing research projects of residents and graduate students. Highest consideration will be given to those with a research focus in equine infectious disease, geriatric medicine, endocrinology, or performance evaluation.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required.
