Founded in 1936, the School of Veterinary Science has a rich history and a reputation for graduating self-reliant, independent and highly capable veterinarians with plenty of initiative and drive. The School has high quality facilities at the UQ Gatton Campus, providing the teaching, research and clinical infrastructure and resources to develop its strong reputation as a leading provider of veterinary training, research and clinical care. The School also maintains a Small Animal Hospital and Large Animal Clinic at Dayboro, north-west of Brisbane.
The role: As Director of the Small Animal Hospital the successful candidate will provide academic and operational leadership to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the clinical academic staff, as well as to the wider School community.
In providing academic leadership to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the Director – Small Animal Hospital will work with the Business Manager and the School leadership team to establish and pursue strategic directions for the Hospital. The role also supports the Business Manager in their role of maximising the business efficiency of the Hospital’s operations, while ensuring our students are supported in their clinical skills development and accreditation standards are maintained.
The appointee will play a senior leadership role in the School, contribute to teaching in their field, and actively engaging with external organisations to enhance the profile of the Hospital, the School and the University.
The successful applicant will undertake teaching and research and service in small animal surgery. They will contribute to the surgery teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students and will contribute to ongoing development of the curriculum in the field. The successful applicant will be required to develop a research program in an area related to small animal surgery, contribute to and initiate research projects within the School and in strategic collaborations with external agencies. The successful applicant will also contribute to the School’s UQ VETS Small Animal Surgery Service clinical team, which provides veterinary clinical services to the community and for referring veterinarians.
The person: Applicants must have a degree in Veterinary Science or Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent), registrable in Queensland, and a PhD or equivalent advanced clinical training. You must have previous clinical experience in delivery of small animal surgery veterinary services and demonstrated ability to teach students veterinary surgery to a high standard. You must also have leadership experience and achievements in universities and/or other relevant organisations and sound business acumen and an ability to strategically balance the economic and teaching aspects of clinical practice.
Remuneration: This is a full-time continuing appointment at Academic Level D/E depending on qualification and experience. The base remuneration package will be in the range:
Level D: AUD$135,909 – $149,731 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range AUD$159,014 – $175,185 p.a.)
Level E: AUD$175,070 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be AUD$204,831 p.a.).
