Postdoc/Research Assistant in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (Appointment for 12 months with possibility of extension) [Ref. C/R/344/09]

The Barrs-Beatty laboratory is seeking a motivated colleague with a strong interest in the investigation of infectious diseases of dogs, cats and other animals in Hong Kong. 

Duties

The appointee will work on projects related to the detection viral, fungal and other infectious agents from field samples.

They will be involved in/lead the molecular testing pipeline, including DNA/RNA extraction, cPCR/qPCR, analysis of obtained sequence data. Serological testing, and the design and validation of novel assays may be required. Regular data presentation and discussion is required.

Other duties include coordination and curation of field samples and associated data, contributions to administration including stock and inventory management, and working with others to ensure safe working procedures. 

Requirements

A Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in Science or related areas, and no more than 6 years of service after graduation. A strong working knowledge of molecular biology techniques and basic processing and analysis of sequencing reads is required. Experience with other techniques relevant to infectious disease research, including ELISA and bioinformatics would be an advantage for this position. 

Candidates with a PhD and no more than 3 years’ experience after the award of a PhD degree may be considered for appointment as Postdoc.

The candidate should be an excellent communicator (in English) with a strong work ethic. The role would suit a highly organized, self-motivated, problem-solver. Good team skills and a willingness and ability to respond to challenges and to acquire new skills are also required. Cantonese and/or mandarin skills would be an advantage.

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
