Overview
Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL) is responsible for providing accurate, timely diagnostic test results for the patients and medical staff of Cummings School of Veterinary medicine hospitals. Diagnostic laboratory testing is also performed for internal and external research patients by CVDL. Clinical Pathology laboratory testing includes hematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, fluid analysis/cytology, blood banking, and miscellaneous test procedures. Laboratory personnel play a role in the education of veterinary students and medical staff regarding the principles of diagnostic testing and proper preanalytical specimen handling.
What You'll Do
The Clinical Pathology Laboratory supervisor is required to perform all testing provided by the lab, and have an understanding of proper performance and troubleshooting procedures for each assay and analyzer utilized in the lab. This position is responsible for:
- Maintainence and quality control oversight and documentation for each assay provided by the lab.
- Insure adequate supplies are available for all testing procedures in the lab.
- Provide proper training of all employees with respect to proper laboratory safety, tesing procedures and University policies.
- Maintain documentation of all training and keep up to date SOPs.
- Provide work schedules for the employees and insure proper coverage of the laboratory during operational hours.
- In conjuction with the lab manager, will take a lead role in interactions with the hospital if there is a concern about testing, procedures or policies.
- Oversee the laboratory spaces to insure a safe, efficient working environment.
- Take an active role in the financial management of the lab, including overseeing purchases of supplies and reagents at competitive prices, informing the lab manager of price increases of supplies and services and continuous audit of current and newly created sendout testing prices to insure up to date information and costs.
- Perform assigned tasks in the LIS to maintain employee accounts, laboratory accounts and current pricing.
- Assist the lab manager in the overall management of the laboratory as needed and assigned by the lab manager.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- AS or BS in a science-based program is required for this position.
- MLT or MT with current certification and a strong understanding of a wide variety of diagnostic assays is required.
- At least 5 yrs of relevant experience is preferred (in either a human or veterinary diagnostic lab setting).
- Good communication and organizationnal skills are essential.
- The ability to work in a stressful environment in which multiple tasks must be performed simultaneously with accuracy and efficiency is also required.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is necessary
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional experience above 5 years is desired.
- Previous supervisory experience or mentorship experience is desired.
- Direct experiences in assay development, standardization, validation, and quality control are considered an asset.
Pay Range
Minimum $37.65, Midpoint $45.18, Maximum $52.70
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
