FACULTY MEMBERS IN ZOOLOGICAL COMPANION (EXOTIC) ANIMAL MEDICINE

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for up to two full-time zoological companion animal medicine (ZCAM) faculty positions. Teaching of students in the pre-clinical teaching program and in clinical rotations is required. Opportunities for engagement in research and scholarly activity are provided, the extent dependent on the interests of the candidate. Participation in clinical care is required, with an expectation that between 20 – 32 weeks will be spent on clinic duty.

The ZCAM clinical program is delivered under the auspices of the Foster Hospital for Small Animals. The ZCAM program has a robust clinical caseload, excellent student teaching, and an ACZM residency training program. In addition to companion animals, cases associated with local zoos and aquaria are also referred for care. Collaborative opportunities with the Tufts Wildlife Clinic also exist. Additional features of the Foster Small Animal Hospital include VECCS Level 1 emergency service, 1.5T MRI, helical multi-slice CT, fully equipped nuclear medicine suite, C-arm fluoroscopy, portable radiography, laparoscopy/arthroscopy, interventional radiology suite, and Varian linear accelerator with cone beam CT, a multi-leaf collimator and stereotactic radiotherapy.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a highly valued ZCAM program in an academic veterinary hospital with a caseload of nearly 35,000 animals per year. It is an excellent environment for collaborative or independent clinical or applied research and scholarly activity. A Clinical Research Shared Resource, including a clinical trials office, is available to support clinical research.

Qualifications: Requirements include a DVM degree or its equivalent and completion of a formal residency in zoological companion (exotic) animal medicine. In order to support our ZCAM residency program, faculty members must ultimately be board certified. Therefore, preference will be given to individuals who are ACZM board certified, but consideration will be given to individuals who are likely to obtain board certification within two years of hire. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching is required. Ability and interest in engaging in independent or collaborative research and scholarly activity is expected, depending on the interests of the candidate. The rank and appointment track will be dependent on experience, interests, and qualifications of the candidate. Continuous-term (tenure equivalent) track appointments are available for those with a strong interest in research and scholarly activity, while clinical track appointments are available for those who are primarily interested in clinical activity and teaching.

Application procedure: The position is available August 1, 2021. Review of applications will begin August 15th and the search will be continued until a suitable candidate is identified. Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter describing their qualifications, research interests, clinical interests, and teaching experience. The names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references should be provided. Please address your strengths/experiences in diversity and inclusion as it relates to teaching, research, and/or service in your cover letter. Applicants should submit materials through the Interfolio link (http://apply.interfolio.com/90390). For questions about the application process please contact Dr. Leslie Sharkey at Leslie.Sharkey@tufts.edu.
