Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is seeking a motivated, experienced diagnostic pathologist to serve as Director of the Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL) (https://vetmed.tufts.edu/pathology-service/). The CVDL serves primarily the hospitals and clinics of Cummings School, which care for ~100,000 animals per year. The CVDL supports not only clinical service, but our teaching and research missions.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in expanding our diagnostic services. The Director, reporting to the Dean, will be responsible for all aspects of CVDL operations including strategic planning, and personnel, material, and fiscal management. The CVDL offers necropsy, biopsy, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, clinical pathology, and other related diagnostic services. At full staffing, the CVDL is supported by four anatomic pathologists, four clinical pathologists, three anatomic pathology residents, a manager, two administrative staff, and 13 - 15 technical staff. Additional residency programs are being considered.

The Anatomic Pathology Service processes approximately 2,300 biopsies and 550 necropsies per year.  The Clinical Pathology Laboratory performs hematology and clinical chemistry tests, urinalysis, fecal tests, cytology/fluid analysis, coagulation tests and a variety of other miscellaneous diagnostic tests serving over 50,000 clinical cases per year.  Microbiology and most serology, molecular, and endocrinology tests are sent to outside diagnostic laboratories, but we are intending to expand in-house offerings in these areas. The CVDL receives a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching and research resources.

The successful applicant will hold an academic appointment in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the individual will contribute to diagnostic services, will participate in the DVM teaching, mentor residents, and contribute to the academic program of small and large animal house officers.  Opportunities to engage in independent and collaborative research and scholarly activity are available and encouraged for interested candidates. There are significant opportunities to support and engage in collaborative research with clinical and basic research scientists at Cummings School, Tufts University, and other regional partners.  The departments runs the Comparative Pathology and Genomics Shared Resource which provides research services to internal and external clients and is establishing a flow cytometry shared resource. Areas of research strength in the department and the school include neurosciences, clinical research, cardiovascular health, comparative oncology, infectious disease, global health, and animal-human interactions and policy. See https://vet.tufts.edu/research/ .

Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree and be board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or European College of Veterinary Pathologists.  A minimum of 5 years of experience in diagnostic pathology is required. The Director must possess proven leadership, administrative, and management skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A demonstrated ability to work with others and build a collegial team atmosphere is essential.  Other essential characteristics include an ability to work closely and productively with clinical faculty in all disciplines and an understanding of the importance of our academic missions. Prior experience teaching and engaging in research and scholarly activity are valued, but no required. For candidates with a strong interest in research, a PhD is an asset. Salary, faculty rank, and faculty track will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is eligible for appointment with continuous term (tenure equivalent).

Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2022 and the search will be continued until a suitable candidate is identified. The position start date is negotiable, but as this is a new position, it is available immediately.

Application materials should be submitted electronically through Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/110238).  Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter describing their qualifications, leadership and management experience, diagnostic experience, teaching experience, research interests, and interest in the position.  Please address your strengths/experiences in promoting diversity and inclusion as it relates to leadership, teaching, research, and/or service in your cover letter.  Please provide the names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of five references.  References will not be contacted without your consent. Please direct any questions to Dr. Alastair Cribb at alastair.cribb@tufts.edu.
