Lecturer in Community Veterinary Medicine – Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University

Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Community Veterinary Medicine. This position will supervise a shelter based spay neuter rotation for fourth year (clinical year) veterinary students. The majority of time will be spent at Shelter Partner in Springfield, MA. This is a one-year position, renewable depending on funding. The expectation is to provide up to year-round service with approximately 30 weeks per year spent directly training students at the shelter and other activities. When the rotation is running, the lecturer’s time will be divided among high volume, high quality surgery for shelter patients, and providing other medical care to shelter animals, as needed. The remaining weeks will be divided between non-teaching service at the shelter, service at one of two Tufts Community Medicine clinics, administrative studies, annual leave, and continuing education. Shelter time, both on and off rotation, is not negotiable.

Requirements include a DVM degree or its equivalent in HQ/HV techniques, as well as two years of related experience. Preference will be given to individuals who have one or more years in Shelter of Community Medicine. Strengths are required in teaching while serving as rotation director, and clinical service. Clinical responsibilities include supervision of students on an elective, shelter based spay neuter rotation. Students will perform surgeries on shelter animals and other duties as needed and directed. The rotation director will be responsible supervising students to provide basic care of shelter animals, including:

  • Performing intake exams or post-quarantine exams for transported animals
  • Surgically sterilizing dogs, cats and rabbits
  • Vaccinating shelter animals
  • Providing care for public animals under veterinary supervision, if authorized by the shelter’s Director of Operations
  • Performing dental examinations and cleanings for shelter animals
  • Providing follow-up care to emergencies and surgical complications, as needed
  • Working alongside the shelter animal care team to maintain the health of the shelter animals, and to contract and prevent disease in the shelter population
  • Helping to make euthanasia decisions, if warranted, and when asked by shelter operations
  • Observing all controlled substance regulations and other shelter SOPs
  • Helping out wherever needed in the shelter

Enthusiasm for teaching is a requirement for this position and the rotation director is expected to maintain a spirit of collegiality and to set an excellent example for students.
This position is available immediately and the search will continue until a suitable candidate is identified. Applicants should submit a letter of intent outlining their interests, experience, and qualifications, current curriculum vitae, and three professional references via Interfolio at: http://apply.interfolio.com/55588.

Inquiries can be directed to Dr. Emily McCobb , chair of the search committee for more information about this position.
