Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities
Serve as a Veterinary Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine, rotating through all sections of the laboratory, with responsibility for performing the full laboratory procedures and tests in the area of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, cytology, parasitology and coprology.
Evaluate requested procedures to determine the suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if necessary.
Prepare the specimen appropriately for analysis, insuring that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained.
Select, perform, evaluate and monitor the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures using a manual and/or instrumental technique in accordance with established protocols. Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction, locate and implement corrections.
Calibrate, standardize, adjust and maintain instruments. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks.
Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products; maintain proper records for quality control reports.
Prepare reagents and primary reference materials.
Write laboratory reports and submit test results appropriately and in a timely manner to the appropriate individuals.
Possess a willingness to be cross-trained in other diagnostic areas.
Must be willing to receive on-the-job training necessary to become proficient in operating the laboratory.
Perform other duties as assigned by the clinical pathologist and department head.
Bachelor of Science as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Biological/Premedical Sciences or closely related discipline
One year of laboratory experience including handling of samples, ordering and stocking of supplies preferred
Must be able to communicate effectively
Must have good computer skills (Microsoft Office and other software programs)
Must have good motor coordination and manual dexterity
Must have demonstrated collegiality
Must work well with others
Commensurate with education, training and experience
