This is a non-tenure-eligible faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Science’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky, with a 12-month appointment in the Research Title Series. The Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center has considerable expertise and an established national and international reputation in the field of equine musculoskeletal sciences.

Our new colleague will be administratively responsible to the Chair of the Department of Veterinary Science. The initial appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank, with an assigned distribution of effort of 95% research and 5% service. The position appointee is expected to focus on the musculoskeletal system, orthopedics, and/or sports medicine in the horse with an expectation of advancing biomedical knowledge and understanding in these areas.

This colleague will be encouraged to collaborate with other faculty in the department and elsewhere and to develop an extramurally funded independent research program related to equine musculoskeletal sciences. As a member of the Graduate Faculty, the appointee will be expected to participate in the education and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars/fellows.
Position Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the position is to develop a nationally recognized research program in equine musculoskeletal sciences. The appointee is expected to garner extramural funding for her/his research program and to interact with industry stakeholders.

The mission of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center is to conduct research on diseases that affect the health and welfare of the horse, which are consistent with the needs of the local, national, and international horse industry. This position focuses on the musculoskeletal system while across the Gluck Center there is additional expertise in infectious diseases, reproduction, immunology, parasitology, toxicology, genetics, and diagnostic testing.

Required qualifications: The successful candidate for the position shall have the following academic/professional qualifications:

a. PhD and DVM (or equivalent).
b. Advanced academic training and/or research experience in an area pertinent to the musculoskeletal system.
c. Demonstrated potential as a productive research scientist in areas relevant to the musculoskeletal system, orthopedics, and/or sports medicine.
d. Academically qualified for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor in the Research Title Series.

Preferred qualifications:
a. Demonstrated potential to attract and maintain extramural research funding.
b. Demonstrated potential to be involved in interdisciplinary and collaborative research and in the training of graduate students.
c. Demonstrated potential to interact with industry stakeholders.

Criteria for Promotion: Appointment to the position will be at the level of Assistant Professor. Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor will be based on the candidate’s performance in the position in the areas of (i) research, (ii) mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral students, (iii) university and public/professional service, and (iv) attainment of professional status and peer recognition. Assessment of the candidate’s level of performance in each of these areas will be made by peer evaluation. These will include internal faculty, external referees identified by the candidate, as well as independent of the candidate.

Evaluation of a candidate’s performance relative to original and productive research related to the musculoskeletal system, orthopedics, and/or sports medicine in the horse will be based upon (i) significance of the body of research published by the candidate in refereed journals, books, conference proceedings, reports, etc.; (ii) impact of the candidate’s research on advancing our understanding and/or resolution of a major scientific problem in her/his field of specialization; and (iii) success of the candidate in obtaining nationally competitive or other extramural funding in support of her/his research program.

Specific criteria for evaluating performance in student and postdoctoral training activities include (i) mentoring of graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars; (ii) successful guidance of graduate students to their terminal degrees; (iii) serving on student advisory committees; and (iv) subsequent professional accomplishments of graduate students or postdoctoral scholars whose training was supervised by the candidate.

Criteria for evaluating the candidate’s contribution to university and public/professional service may include (i) extent and effectiveness of service on departmental, college or university committees, panels, forums, boards, etc.; (ii) public service involving professional activities that emanate from the special competence of the individual in her/his area of expertise; (iii) participation and leadership in professional societies, specialty-organizations, review panels, scientific conferences, etc.; and (iv) review of journal manuscripts, grant applications, etc.
