Job Description Summary
The Department of Clinical Sciences in the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a strategic leader, experienced academic clinician, and accomplished educator to serve as its Department Head. The Department Head will be responsible for all aspects of the department’s academic mission in research, instruction, and clinical services. The Department Head reports directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and will work closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs on issues regarding the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
The Department Head is responsible for promoting the success of faculty, staff and students. He/she will exhibit creative leadership and integration for professional veterinary and graduate education (interns, residents, and MS/PhD students), and for faculty development in areas of teaching, research, and clinical services. An important role of the Department Head is to guide faculty through the promotion and tenure process. He/she will be expected to effectively promote collaboration among other departments/colleges of the university and beyond, and to represent the Department to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. The Department Head will manage the fiscal resources and facilities of the department and will work with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to ensure that the Veterinary Teaching Hospital functions effectively to support the College’s academic mission in clinical education, research and outreach.
Minimum Qualifications
Required qualifications are the DVM (or equivalent) degree and board certification in a clinical discipline recognized by the AVMA. An advanced graduate degree (MS or PhD), experience as a clinician in a veterinary teaching hospital, and administrative experience are preferred. The successful candidate will have a strong record of achievement in scholarly work, professional/graduate education, effective leadership, and dedication to veterinary education and student success. The candidate will demonstrate accomplishments sufficient to qualify for hire at the rank of tenured Professor. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
