The Department of Comparative Pathobiology in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University seeks up to two highly motivated and experienced veterinary anatomic pathologists at the rank of associate or full professor (continuous term track – tenure equivalent). Comparative pathobiology is a multi-disciplinary department, with five anatomic pathologists, three clinical pathologists, clinicians, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, anatomists, physiologists, and laboratory animal medicine, when fully staffed.
Faculty members in the continuous term track are expected to contribute to our teaching, diagnostic pathology, and research missions. The veterinary diagnostic laboratory manages a robust anatomic pathology caseload consisting of primarily dogs, cats, exotics and zoologic species, lesser numbers of horses, alpacas, and small ruminants originating primarily from our academic hospitals and clinics. Our service also has access to wild animals through our wildlife clinic. The diagnostic anatomic pathology laboratory processes approximately 2,300 biopsies and 550 necropsies per year. With cases coming from both primary and tertiary care facilities, we see a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching resources and supporting research and scholarly activity. Time devoted to diagnostic responsibilities would be expected to range from 18 – 30 weeks, depending on teaching and research responsibilities.
Teaching opportunities occur across the four years of the DVM program and includes small group, classroom, clinical skills, and fourth year diagnostic rotations. The service supports 3 anatomic pathology residents, and faculty are expected to assist in the supervision and training of our residents.
Opportunities for independent and collaborative research are available at Cummings School. In addition to the diagnostic and clinic caseload (total caseload across our hospitals and clinic are approximately 125,000 cases/year), unique resources include the Comparative Pathology and Genomics Core, the BSL-3 New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory, the Clinical Research Shared Resource and Clinical Trials Office, the Animal Resources Division, and our participation in Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Areas of strength at Cummings include neurosciences, infectious disease, and global health (including wildlife), cardiovascular health, comparative oncology, and clinical research. While preference may be given to individuals whose interests align with areas of strength, any research areas will be considered. Collaboration with clinicians to support clinic research is expected as part of the diagnostic service responsibilities.
The amount of time available for research and scholarly activity will be dependent on the interests and expertise of the individual. The research time allocation would be expected to be between 12 and 18 weeks, with higher allocations of time being dependent on external research funding.
Qualifications: Candidates must possess a DVM or related degree and be certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathology or European College of Veterinary Pathology in anatomic pathology. Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic biopsy and necropsy service, with demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders and support clinical care and effective communication skills are required. Excellence in teaching and demonstrated success in collaborative or independent research and scholarly activity commensurate with the time available are expected. A PhD or equivalent degree would be considered an asset. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience, and appointments at the assistant professor level for promising candidates would also be considered.
