The combined service units provide diagnostic testing for the clinicians and patients in the hospitals and clinics that make up the Cummings Veterinary Medical Center (, as well as in support of research activities for internal and external clients. The CVDL is supported by four anatomic pathologists, three clinical pathologists, three anatomic pathology residents, and 13 – 15 technical staff.

The Clinical Pathology Laboratory performs hematology and clinical chemistry tests, urinalysis, fecal tests, cytology/fluid analysis, coagulation tests and a variety of other miscellaneous diagnostic tests serving over 50,000 clinical cases per year. Microbiology and most serology and endocrinology tests are sent to outside diagnostic laboratories. The services see a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching and research resources.
