The NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine (“CVM”) invites qualified candidates to apply for the Department Head, Molecular Biomedical Sciences position.

The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has achieved national recognition in research, teaching and clinical excellence, and the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (MBS) plays critical roles in all of these areas. The MBS department https://cvm.ncsu.edu/research/departments/mbs) bridges basic and clinical research and is home to 45 multi-disciplinary faculty, as well as staff, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and house officers.  Faculty are recognized experts in the fields of cell biology and physiology, cancer biology, developmental biology, environmental science and toxicology, genomics, infectious diseases, neuroscience, nutrition, pharmacology, anesthesiology, radiology, and pedagogy. MBS faculty actively participate and/or play leadership roles in multiple university-wide Interdisciplinary Programs (IDP) at NC State including the Center for Human Health and the Environment, the Comparative Medicine Institute, The Global Health, Genetic and Genomics and Data Science Academies, and the Chancellor Faculty Excellence Clusters.

The MBS Department Head must have a passion for translational research and an enthusiasm for linking basic science and clinical research to solve the critical problems in human and animal health. The MBS Department Head must provide leadership in, enthusiasm for, and as may be required, an overt willingness to learn, understand and support the clinical and teaching dedicated missions of the department.  The MBS Department Head must be an innovative, creative, visionary, and collaborative leader with the ability and experience required to guide the members of this multi-disciplinary department in achieving these three missions.

Specific responsibilities of the Department Head are to:

  • Provide academic and scientific leadership in defining and achieving MBS goals.
  • Grow the MBS basic and translational research enterprise.
  • Support and encourage excellence in veterinary medical and graduate student teaching.
  • Ensure that the department fully supports its clinical programs and responsibilities, currently in anesthesia, radiology, imaging, and nutrition.
  • Manage MBS fiscal planning and administration and evaluations of faculty and staff.
  • Maintain a culture of collaboration and collegiality and promote excellence within MBS.
  • Enhance a diverse and inclusive community of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Maintain a strong mentorship program for professional development of MBS faculty and staff members.
  • Serve as the primary departmental advocate in enhancing the visibility and prestige of MBS sections and disciplines, and in growing interdisciplinary cross-institutional programs.
  • Provide leadership and support for the integration of MBS faculty and students within the greater NC State University community and the nearby universities and medical schools, including the University of North Carolina and Duke University. Promote existing interdisciplinary programs within the college and university.

Qualifications:  

  • PhD required.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) (or equivalent) and PhD preferred.
  • Demonstrated academic leadership. A record of active participation in professional/scientific affairs and of research and teaching experience.
  • Current Rank of Tenured Full Professor or currently eligible or under evaluation for such
