The Department of Clinical Sciences in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant professor of cardiology. This is a continuous-term (tenure equivalent) track position, with a significant research and scholarly activity commitment. We seek an enthusiastic, team-oriented faculty member who will provide outstanding advanced care for cardiology patients, excellent service to our clients and referring veterinarians, and contribute to research and teaching at the Cummings School. In addition to clinical rotation teaching, formal instruction in the DVM program and education of house officers is expected.  There are opportunities for pedagogical innovation and leadership associated with a planned curriculum revision. The successful individual is expected to develop and sustain an active research program.

The cardiology service provides care in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) and the Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) on the Grafton campus.  The FHSA and HLA are fully equipped multi-specialty teaching hospitals, offering referral services and 24/7 emergency care.  The FHSA caseload is primarily dogs, cats, and exotic species, with approximately 35,000 cases per year. The cardiology caseload typically consists of referral cases and animals admitted by the emergency service in the FHSA for cardiovascular emergencies.

The cardiology service has 4 ACVIM Cardiology diplomates, 3 cardiology technicians, 3 cardiology residents, and 1 cardiology research intern.   We aim to have 2 cardiology services working simultaneously each week, with one service devoted primarily to inpatients and consults, and the other service focusing on outpatient appointments.  Our service has a strong interventional caseload with cardiac catheterization procedures occurring almost every week. We are also starting a V-Clamp surgical program. The cardiology service has access to fluoroscopic equipment, computed tomography, a 3T MRI, and transesophageal echo. Faculty are expected to assist with specialty board review sessions, journal club, and other aspects of resident training, including supervision of resident research projects.

Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, supported by a Clinical Trials Office. Current areas of research in the group include canine mitral valve disease, cardio-oncology, nutritional heart disease, and clinical management of canine and feline cardiovascular disease. There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty on this campus or with researchers on other Tufts campuses and within the New England medical community. All types of research and scholarly activity are valued in the school’s promotions process.

The allocation of time ranges from 20 - 26 weeks for clinical activity, 12 - 20 weeks for research and scholarly activity, 4 - 8 weeks for classroom and laboratory teaching, and 3 - 6 weeks for administrative service, depending on the rank and interests of the candidate. Vacation and university time off is 5 weeks.

Qualifications

Must hold a DVM or equivalent degree.  Completion of a residency program in cardiology meeting the requirements of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Cardiology specialty, or a similar specialty organization, is mandatory. Board certification in cardiology is required at, or no later than two years following, the date of hire. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching at all levels is expected. Experience and interest in research relevant to the strengths of the department or the school are considered assets.

Application Instructions

The application deadline is July 15th, 2023. The start date is negotiable, but the position is available starting September 1, 2023. Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter describing their qualifications, clinical experience and interests, research and scholarly interests, and teaching experience.  Please address strengths and experiences in diversity and inclusion as it relates to teaching, research, and/or service in the cover letter. The names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references should be provided. Applicants should submit materials through Interfolio here (https://apply.interfolio.com/126140).
