The Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. Since 1979, we have offered high quality medical care, consultation, referral and emergency veterinary services for the care of dogs, cats and exotic pets. In addition, the hospital creates a positive learning experience for TCSVM students and student technicians with regard to small animal medicine and supports the training of Small Animal Medicine technicians.

This position will require the Veterinary Technician to work a rotating schedule, where they will work in the ECC Department one week, and work in the Internal Medicine department the following week.

When scheduled in the ECC department, the Veterinary Technician provides high quality nursing care and treatment to hospitalized patients. It is expected that this individual will assist the Emergency Critical Care teams and the Ward Technician teams. Duties could entail assisting clinicians and students in clinics and with special procedures, assisting with all necessary anesthesia and sedation of patients, providing instruction and training as needed to veterinary students, technicians, residents and interns. This position must interact with clients, clinicians, students and staff in a professional manner, representing the internal medicine service in a positive fashion.

When scheduled in the Internal Medicine department, the Veterinary Technician works as part of an integrated clinical care team to provide high quality nursing care to inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and isolation cases that are being managed by the Internal Medicine service. The Veterinary Technician provides assistance to the clinical care team with regard to outpatient appointments, inpatient treatments and procedures, technician appointments/discharges and special procedures and imaging. The Veterinary Technician assists in the ECC section or the wards as determined by supervisor’s assessment of caseload. Hours may include some evenings and weekends. In addition, the Veterinary Technician instructs veterinary students on each rotation.

This position is expected to participate in clinical rounds. This position may require occasional overtime. This position may be required to assist other areas of the hospital as needed. The position requires weekend and holiday on call coverage and is considered part of the essential personnel who are required to be present in the hospital during weather or other emergencies.


Basic Requirements:

Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a fast-paced veterinary hospital with demonstrated leadership
Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology or other animal biology related field
CVT or licensure eligible
Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Strong technical skills and familiarity with endotracheal intubation, sedation and general anesthesia are a must.
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

3 or more years’ experience in a small animal practice.
Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent and a current CVT/RVT license is preferred.
Candidate should possess the ability to handle a high caseload and stressful situations in a professional manner.
Following direction and prioritizing the workload is a necessity.
Candidate should have a good understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with veterinary pharmacology.
Prior experience with an emphasis on ECC preferred.
Technical abilities should include patient restraint, excellent venipuncture skills, good working knowledge and skill in anesthesia, knowledge of medicating, monitoring and treating a variety of patients.
This position requires excellent interpersonal skills in relating to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff and clients.
Prior leadership role is desirable.
Must be able to work well independently as well as part of a team.
Candidate should be highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude.
Flexibility with work schedule is a must.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Candidate must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests. Overtime and participation in an on call schedule for emergency hemodialysis cases which can include weekends and holidays are required.
