    The HEAL Group (healgroup.org) studies a range of issues focused on the interface of health and livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa utilizing a One Health approach. We combine approaches from the biological and social sciences to understand the determinants of health and their relationships with livelihoods. Our goal is to understand the health constraints of both animals and people, and to use this information to improve livelihoods through effective interventions.

    The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), NC State, has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked 3rd among the nation’s colleges of veterinary medicine in the current U.S. News & World Report survey. Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health and Pathobiology.

    The project: ‘Reducing the impact of production constraints on semi-intensive poultry producers in Ethiopia’ is a collaboration between the CVM, NC State, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (Poultry Science), NC State, University of Liverpool and a number of Ethiopian institutions.

    **Position is expected to end after two years and requires that the selected incumbent spend a significant portion of that two-year period in Ethiopia.**

    Poultry production systems have a considerable role in the economies of low income countries. Several programs in Ethiopia have attempted to improve poultry production (both backyard and semi-intensive producers) as a means to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods. The increase in income, population and urbanization within Ethiopia is expected to increase the demand for livestock products.

    The Growth and Transformation Plan for the livestock subsector produced by the Government of Ethiopia has made enhancing livestock production and productivity (including poultry) a key strategic priority. Ethiopian poultry keepers have identified numerous constraints to production. These constraints reduced the productivity of poultry producers, limiting their income, food security and livelihood strategies.

    The project objective is the investigation and mitigation of production constraints identified by semi-intensive poultry producers in central Ethiopia. The selected individual will work on the three project goals:

    • Investigation of production constraints for semi-intensive poultry producers in
    Ethiopia.

    • Design, development and evaluation of integrated extension program using appropriate research methodologies to reduce production constraints for semiintensive poultry producers in Ethiopia.

    • Development of training package for extension service providers

    To that end, the position’s activities include the management of concurrent research projects, and the collection and analysis of data.

    The person selected must be adept at exercising independent judgement and decision making. They will work independently on collecting and analyzing project data as described above and will be responsible for formulating research methods and suggesting options for improving the quality of the research.

    The incumbent’s research efforts will contribute towards publications, presentations and other funding opportunities.

    Additionally, the selected individual will be expected to have effective communication skills with both investigators and students assigned to project, and must work well independently and within a team.

    The person hired for this position will spend a significant amount of time in an overseas location (Ethiopia).

    Department Required Skills:

    Prior research experience.

    Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.

    Ability to adhere to tight deadlines, goal oriented, and high level of
    motivation.

    Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    Computer literacy with Microsoft offices and data analysis software.

    Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

    This position requires a DVM or equivalent degree. Additionally, a Masters degree qualification in epidemiology, public health or global health and previous experience working in a low-income country are preferred.
