    Job Description
    The Baranzini lab is seeking to hire a full-time specialist to provide support for users of a state-of-the-art gnotobiotic mouse facility (using a bio-exclusion caging system). The successful candidate will manage and maintain our specialized gnotobiotic mouse facility at UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The job will involve basic mouse husbandry within gnotobiotic isolators, including monitoring of food, water, and bedding conditions, as well as sterilization and introduction of food, cages, bedding, water, and environmental enrichment as necessary.

    The successful candidate will be comfortable handling mice, including restraining animals for collection of fecal pellets to determine germ-free status, as well as tagging animals for identification. Germ-free monitoring via basic aerobic and anaerobic culture methods, (automated) DNA extraction, PCR, and agarose gel electrophoresis will also be performed.

    Caring for mice in an SPF facility may also be required. Experience with murine gavage is a plus, and the candidate must be comfortable performing mouse health checks and interacting with UCSF veterinary staff as necessary.

    Other required duties involve monitoring stocks of consumables and reordering in a timely manner and maintaining detailed records of tasks performed, in addition to other duties as assigned. We are looking for a detail-oriented and self-directed person who has the desire to learn new skill sets and can handle increased responsibilities as the gnotobiotic facilities expand.
    Salary will be competitive and based on experience.

    Required Qualifications:
    Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of research experience.
    Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of research experience.
    Applicant's CV must list (pending) qualifications upon application submission.

    Required Skill Set
    Prior experience with mouse husbandry, including cage changes, mouse identification via ear punch, colony maintenance, breeding, weaning, euthanasia via CO2 and cervical dislocation
    Ability to work independently and plan ahead
    Great focus and attention to detail
    Ability to interact with researchers for the planning of experiments
    Detailed daily notebook recording of tasks performed and tracking of animals in an online database

    Applicants must meet all requirements by the time of appointment.

    Desired additional skills:
    Germ-free monitoring: basic aerobic and anaerobic culture methods, DNA extraction, PCR
    Perform mouse health checks and contact/interact with LARC staff and veterinarians as necessary
    genotyping (via tailing, digestion, PCR, and agarose gel electrophoresis),
