This is a 12-month tenure-eligible faculty (Assistant or Associate Professor) Regular Title Series position in One Health and Infectious Diseases in the Department of Veterinary Science’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky. The Department’s website is
https://vetsci.ca.uky.edu/ . The mission of the Department of Veterinary Science is to assure the health and viability of animal agriculture through teaching, discovery, research and service. The Gluck Equine Research Center has received international recognition for its research dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the horse. The successful candidate will contribute to the college mission by engaging in research, education, and service activities that address One Health and Infectious Diseases.
The initial appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, with an anticipated distribution of effort of 85% research, 5% service, and 10% teaching. The appointee will be administratively responsible to the Chair of the Department of Veterinary Science.

Key Responsibilities:
· Establish an internationally recognized research program in One Health using innovative approaches to investigate, manage, and/or prevent zoonotic diseases or antimicrobial resistance, including but not limited to fields such as molecular epidemiology of pathogens, therapeutic interventions, microbial pathogenesis that complement existing areas of expertise within the department.
· Conduct interdisciplinary research and scholarly activities to address complex challenges at the interfaces of human, animal, and/or environmental health, with emphasis on equines, companion animals, food animals, food safety, and environmental sustainability.
· As a member of the graduate faculty of the university, the appointee will be expected to participate in and contribute to the education and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral trainees.
· Collaborate with other colleges within the University of Kentucky, including but not limited to the College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, College of Dentistry, and College of Nursing, to foster interdisciplinary approaches to address One Health issues and promote collaborative research.
· Work closely with state laboratories, government agencies, and industry partners to address emerging health threats, enhance disease surveillance and monitoring capabilities, and develop strategies to mitigate health risks to animals and humans.
· Establish and maintain robust relationships with funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to secure competitive extramural funding to support the One Health initiatives.
Required qualifications:
· PhD or an equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline is required.
· An additional DVM degree is desirable.
· Demonstrated expertise and experience in One Health concepts and principles, with a focus on equines, companion animals, food animals, food safety, and/or environmental health.
· Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
· Demonstrated ability to attract and maintain extramural research funding (from federal agencies, private foundations, industry, and/or other sources).
· Excellent skills in communication and collaboration, with the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams and engage with diverse backgrounds.
· For consideration at the rank of Associate Professor, a strong record of peer-reviewed scholarly publications, graduate student mentoring, and extramural competitive research grants as independent lead investigator from federal agencies is necessary.
Criteria for promotion for the appointments starting at the level of Assistant Professor: The promotion to the rank of Associate Professor will be based on the candidate’s performance in the position in the areas of (A) research, (B) mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral students, (C) instruction, (D) University and public/professional service, and (E) attainment of professional status and peer recognition. Assessment of the candidate’s level of performance in each of these areas will be made by peer evaluation. These will include internal faculty, external referees identified by the candidate, as well as independent of the candidate.
