The Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Professor of Practice track to join our team at Quality Milk Production Services at our Northern Regional Laboratory in Canton, New York.
Quality Milk Production Services (QMPS) , in the Animal Health Diagnostic Center and New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, is a leading diagnostic, service and research unit of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, serving dairy farmers, the dairy industry, and dairy veterinarians in New York State, the nation, and beyond. The focus of QMPS research, service, and teaching is on udder health and related herd health, animal welfare, milk quality, and dairy farm employee management. QMPS operates three regional laboratories in New York State, in addition to its central services on the Cornell campus in Ithaca, maintaining a constant presence on dairy farms across the state and beyond to offer comprehensive evaluation of dairy farm operations regarding optimal and safe production of high-quality milk. Sustained New York State funding and constant revenue generated from fees for diagnostic testing and farm surveys and consults, with an operating budget exceeding $3,000,000 and more than 25 staff and faculty, provides a strong background to launch externally funded cutting-edge research projects and programs to further udder health and dairy animal welfare, dairy production, and productivity. At the same time, we are deeply committed to continuously innovating QMPS services to proactively address the evolving opportunities of the New York State dairy industry, ensuring the program’s relevance and impact as the industry grows and transforms in the years ahead. New York State is home to ~630,000 dairy cows on >3,000 farms and ranks among the top five milk-producing states in the U.S.
Individuals with DVM and/or PhD degrees, or equivalent, and advanced training, research interests, capacity, and performance in udder health, mastitis management and milk quality are encouraged to apply. Other desirable qualities of the successful candidate include strong interpersonal, leadership, communication skills, and the ability to work in collaborative research, clinical, and teaching environments.
The responsibilities of the position will include day-to-day leadership of the Northern Regional QMPS laboratory, human resource development, and financial management. Responsibilities furthermore include development and maintenance of close contacts with dairy clients, with an emphasis on udder health management on dairy farms of various sizes. Candidates should have strong interest in modern and innovative technologies to optimize on-farm services, improve communications with clients, and enhance farm employee training. QMPS offers unique opportunities to implement innovations for udder health data mining, assessment, and management, which allows for personal growth and development.
The successful candidate is expected to work closely with dairy veterinarians in Northern New York State, keeping them abreast of new research and programs, involving them in on-farm milk quality assessment, and formulating diagnostic and treatment recommendations. Establishment of extension, education, and applied independent and collaborative research activities or initiatives in milk quality and udder health are expected. Excellent opportunities exist for investigative collaborations within the College of Veterinary Medicine, with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and beyond.
Distribution of effort will be determined in accordance with administrative and service needs, academic priorities, and the candidate’s expertise and academic goals.
The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $140,000. Salary and rank will be commensurate with credentials and experience.
