My current research interests are focused on determining if there is a link between exposure to bioaccumulative organochlorine compounds and the development of ·insulin resistance and subsequent type 2 diabetes. Recent epidemiological evidence has demonstrated that high plasma concentrations of certain organochlorine compounds are highly correlated with the occurrence of diabetes and insulin resistance after normalization for body mass index. Based on these studies and other data, I am utilizing in vitro cell culture models of insulin sensitive tissues to determine whether exposure to bioaccumulative organochlorine compounds alters the insulin signaling pathway and ultimately insulin-stimulated glucose uptake as mechanisms for the induction of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
