POSITION AVAILABLE: Assistant or Associate Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine
SALARY: The current base pay range is $183,100 - $236,400. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay (i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step) are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications and experience.
START DATE: Negotiable

QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian (DVM or equivalent) with advanced training and clinical competence in small animal internal medicine is required. Experience and competence in extracorporeal medicine and blood purification is required. Board certification in small animal internal medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM), or completion of a residency program approved by the ACVIM or ECVIM by the effective date of appointment is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD degree or advanced clinical training. Demonstrated ability to prescribe and oversee extracorporeal treatments independently (with the support of a technical team) is preferred. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching, particularly clinical instruction, is required. Didactic and clinical teaching capability in extracorporeal medicine, and related topics is desired. Documented research record or potential to develop an independent research program in extracorporeal medicine, blood purification and/or related topics such as nephrology, immune-mediated diseases, intoxications and oncologic diseases is desired. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals must obtain a full CA license (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846) or a University license (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1) prior to beginning clinical duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical: The position includes a 50% clinical commitment to the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and residents in the clinical setting; providing excellence in health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients. As part of this clinical commitment, there will be time dedicated to running the extracorporeal and blood purification unit in collaboration with faculty colleagues.
Teaching: Responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and 4) participation in the graduate academic programs (MS and PhD) of the campus. In addition, as part of the SAIM team, teaching in other area of SAIM may be required.
Research: The development of a creative, independent and productive basic and/or clinically oriented research program in extracorporeal medicine, blood purification and related topics such as nephrology and immune-mediated disease treated with blood purification is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position, including publication of results in professional/scientific journals. Individual will provide leadership in directing research projects of residents and graduate students.
Professional Competence: Will advance the discipline within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to be ACVIM or ECVIM board certified (small animal internal medicine) within 3 years of appointment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for or have the potential to develop accomplishments in extracorporeal medicine, and related topics such as nephrology, immune-mediated disease, intoxications and oncologic diseases.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required.
