The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for an Instructor position in large animal internal medicine. We are looking for additional faculty to join our team as we expand our undergraduate class size in September 2020. This position will be at the rank of Instructor (tenure track) or Senior Instructor (with tenure). The position will have 90% of its time focused on teaching with 10% dedicated to service.

Teaching will largely be comprised of clinical and professional skills teaching of DVM students. In addition to equine instruction, multi-species instruction in the clinical skills program is expected, including cattle and small ruminants. Additional contributions to didactic, field and 4th year rotation teaching, and course coordination will be required.

UCVM employs a distributed veterinary teaching hospital and clinical duties and 4th year rotation teaching will occur in partner equine specialty practices and other practice settings. Mentoring of advanced trainees (such as interns) and graduate students is expected.

Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) with immediate eligibility for licensure with the ABVMA and advanced clinical training and/or a graduate degree in clinical or educational research is considered and asset. Board certification is considered desirable but not required.

Appointments at the rank of Instructor requires evidence of successful undergraduate teaching abilities. The duties of an Instructor will normally include, but not go beyond the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.

Appointments at the rank of Senior Instructor requires evidence of successful undergraduate teaching effectiveness and innovation in teaching methods; evidence that the individual is capable of initiating and participating in a wide variety of teaching activities. The studies of a Senior Instructor will normally include, but not go beyond the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.

UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM’s DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 30-32 students per year, with an expected expansion to 50 students. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
